Mary of Plymouth - A Story of the Pilgrim Settlement by James Otis

The purpose of this series of stories is to show the children, and even those who have already taken up the study of history, the home life of the colonists with whom they meet in their books. To this end every effort has been made to avoid anything savoring of romance, and to deal only with facts, so far as that is possible, while describing the daily life of those people who conquered the wilderness whether for conscience sake or for gain.

That the stories may appeal more directly to the children, they are told from the viewpoint of a child, and purport to have been related by a child. Should any criticism be made regarding the seeming neglect to mention important historical facts, the answer would be that these books are not sent out as histories,—although it is believed that they will awaken a desire to learn more of the building of the nation,—and only such incidents as would be particularly noted by a child are used.

Surely it is entertaining as well as instructive for young people to read of the toil and privations in the homes of those who came into a new world to build up a country for themselves, and such homely facts are not to be found in the real histories of our land.

I ordered this book for my children and read it before they did. I appreciate that it is well written. It also appears to be accurate history from my admittedly limited knowledge of history. My ten year old daughter loved it, too. (The others haven't read it yet.) The book is written in first person and Mary writes about her life after they arrived in Plymouth on the Mayflower. She includes a lot of information about what everyday life was like. I will be ordering more books by James Otis!

Mary of Plymouth A Story of the Pilgrim Settlement eBook James Otis Reviews

This was a required reading for me, and I was astounded at how boring it was. Many of the events described in the book were at random times, and it was difficult to get a good sense of time in the book. It was was more boring than any documentery that I had ever seen. Do not waiste your time and money on this book, you will regret it.
I read this book out loud to my children ages 9,7,& 5 the week before Thanksgiving. It is full of wonderful information. We all loved it! We learned so much. I would highly recommend it. Fabulous book.
Adults and kids (grades 5-7) who love history will receive a lot of accurate information on the daily life of the Pilgrims as seen through the eyes of a school-aged girl. While this book may not be enjoyed by kids who have been raised on sensational, continual-action TV, videos, or books, it will be enjoyed by those who love to read and who enjoy a good old-fashioned book that is well written.
Mary and her family are among the Mayflower's small band of pilgrims that founded Ply mouth. Through the eyes of this young girl, students can view the daily lifestyle of settlers in an American colony. "My name is Mary, and I am setting down all these things about our people here in this new world, hoping some day to send to my dear friend, Hannah, who lives in Scrooby, England, what may really come to be a story, even though the writer of it is only sixteen years old, having lived in Plymouth since the day our company landed from the "Mayflower" in 1620, more than eleven years ago." Mary and the Pilgrims come to an America today's children would not recognize. Desolate and cold, there are no homes, no churches, no stores, no crops, no livestock. How did they build homes in the cold of a New England winter? What did they eat? What did they use to make candles and eating utensils? What about elections, church services, Indians, cooking, new foods? Written in the form of a letter from Mary home to her friend in England, this title describes day-to-day life for the Pilgrims in the New World. Give your children a sense of American history-in a spellbinding, easy-to-absorb fashion. Mary of Plymouth is a story as instructive as it is appealing.
